Creating Inclusive Communities for LGBTQI & HIV+ Older Adult

ahcancalED has partnered with SAGE to offer a new training exclusively for AHCA/NCAL members titled Creating Inclusive Communities for LGBTQI and HIV+ Older Adults. SAGE is a national organization providing advocacy and services for LGBTQI elders.

About the Training

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning and intersex patients and residents have unique concerns, needs, and strengths that require staff understanding so that these individuals feel safe and affirmed in long term care settings. This online training covers the key information and skills that help to create a more inclusive environment. The course focuses on terminology, the history of the LGBTQI experience, and common questions and scenarios to make sure nursing facility and assisted living staff are skilled at delivering culturally competent LGBTQI care.

After completing this training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the unique needs of LGBTQI older adults.
  • Provide reasons why LGBTQI older adults may hide their LGBTQI identities, or be fearful accessing services
  • Identify practices to create a more welcoming and supportive environment
